A square peg in a round hole
The life of a person circles around his/her norms and values and one has to live according to the standards set by a society. Another reality which exists in society of Pakistan is unobserved and unknown force which is prevailing in one’s life. We can’t call that force negative which leads one life towards disappointment but that is the peer group pressures which one has to face. These pressures are actually to make person’s life organized and to have a happy life without thinking about his/her wishes .A child born in a doctor’s family is fantasied to take up the same profession; even though it may not be his ideology.
Mostly a child’s feelings, interests and thinking are suppressed to such an extent that his own abilities are sabotaged. It doesn’t mean that they can’t do what they want but through peer pressures their minds are diverted. They are unable to define their goal and the shift is from their wishes to the parents. They set their goals according to wishes of their parents. They are not given a platform to negotiate. The core problem is lack of counseling. It’s just like a square peg which is not made for a round hole. Forcefully their preoccupied minds just have to fit within the frame work of their parents thinking and desires. Apart from hurdles and difficulties, which their minds have to tolerate, they have to forgo their own aspirations. When an individual wants to retrace his steps, it’s too late.
In this so called, ‘Democratic Pakistani Society’ freedom of expression has to be applied directly. This taboo issue is now the talk of every coffee table but nobody wants to implement it. Awareness is needed on parental level. They should be educated on this social issue because life of such persons becomes depressing and they then create a pessimistic outlook about a society.
The exigency of hour is to highlight such issues in a progressive way. A strategy should be designed in such way which is interactive and is made according to the minds of people within their norms and value, so the message will be conveyed in a meaningful way.
